September gets a lot of attention for new backpacks, lunch boxes, school shoes and fresh haircuts.
But here’s a thought: why should the kids get to have all the fun?
Just the other day, I signed my kids up for yet another series of swimming lessons.
I didn’t blink at the cost.
Meanwhile, I need a good, reliable, and ideally fashionable pair of sneakers and I just cannot bring myself to pull the trigger.
And I thought: Moms. This is your time, too.
You made it through the juggle that is summer holidays. You kept everyone fed, entertained, sunscreened and more or less where they were supposed to be.
Buy the shoes.
Seriously.
You’re worth it
September has “new year” energy
There is something about September that feels like a reset.
New school year. New notebooks. New routines. New schedules.
Even if you haven’t been in school for decades, September brings a certain “new year” energy with it. And for many adults, it’s the beginning of a much busier stretch of the year.
Work picks up. Kids’ activities start again. Social calendars fill. And for most businesses, we’re heading into the busiest quarter of the year.
So why not use that energy for yourself, too?
If your wardrobe has been feeling a little… meh, September is actually one of the best times of year to bring in a personal stylist.
Fall is one of the smartest times to shop for your wardrobe
I love fall shopping because the season asks more of your wardrobe.
Summer can get away with a dress, sandals and a good pair of earrings. Fall requires a bit more strategy.
We’re layering. We’re adding jackets, sweaters, trousers, boots and coats. We’re moving between chilly mornings, warm afternoons and offices that somehow manage to be both freezing and boiling.
And then there’s the small matter of the next six months of Canadian weather.
This is exactly why September is such a useful time to look at your wardrobe as a whole.
Rather than shopping for one-off pieces because they caught your eye, you can think about foundational wardrobe pieces that will work hard throughout fall and winter.
A great blazer can work with jeans, trousers and dresses. A lightweight knit can layer under a jacket now and a heavier coat later. The right pair of trousers can become the foundation for countless work outfits.
The goal isn’t to buy more.
It’s to make what you own work better.
Give yourself a back-to-school shopping budget
I know. You probably have enough expenses already.
But here’s another way to think about it.
If you genuinely need something, you don’t need to wait until it becomes a crisis to buy it. You don’t need to justify a new pair of shoes by buying them for someone else’s wedding. You don’t need to wait until your current ones have completely fallen apart. And you certainly don’t need to spend money on everyone else and then decide there’s nothing left for you.
If you need a reason to spend on yourself, why not make it an early Christmas gift? Imagine heading into the holiday season with your wardrobe on lockdown.
The clothes fit.
The shoes work.
You know what to wear.
You have outfits ready for the office, dinners, parties and all of the other things that seem to multiply between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.
You’re already winning the holidays.
A personal stylist can take outfit planning off your mental load
Getting dressed is a daily task.
For busy women, it can also become a surprisingly persistent mental task.
What am I wearing to work tomorrow?
Does this still fit?
What goes with these trousers?
Do I have something appropriate for that meeting?
What am I going to wear when I have to go straight from the office to dinner?
None of these questions is particularly difficult. But when you’re already managing work, family, appointments, errands and approximately 47 other things, they become one more decision to make.
A personal stylist can help remove some of that decision fatigue.
Instead of simply shopping with you, a good stylist helps you understand what your wardrobe actually needs.
That might mean identifying gaps, editing out pieces that no longer serve you, finding new ways to wear what you already own and strategically adding a few pieces that make getting dressed easier.
You don’t need a whole new wardrobe
This is probably the biggest misconception I encounter.
Hiring a personal stylist does not automatically mean buying a completely new wardrobe.
In fact, I would argue that the best styling often starts with what you already own.
A closet edit can reveal pieces you’ve forgotten about, identify the things that are almost right and clarify what is genuinely missing.
Then, when you do shop, you’re shopping with intention.
Instead of buying another black sweater because you’re not sure what else to buy, you know that what you actually need is a jacket that works with your existing trousers.
Instead of buying another pair of jeans, you realise you need a shoe that makes your current jeans feel more polished.
Instead of filling your closet with possibilities, you’re building a wardrobe that supports your actual life.
September is a natural wardrobe reset
September is a good time to ask:
What does my life look like for the next six months?
What am I going to need to wear?
What parts of getting dressed currently feel difficult?
What would make my mornings easier?
Does my wardrobe reflect where I am now, or where I was five years ago?
These questions can completely change the way you approach fall shopping.
And if the thought of answering them while standing in a fitting room makes you want to lie down, that’s where a personal stylist comes in.
The kids aren’t the only ones who deserve a glow-up
You spend a lot of time making sure everyone else is ready for the season ahead.
The kids have their school supplies.
The calendar is organised.
The pantry is stocked.
The extracurriculars are booked.
The work schedule is filling up.
So perhaps this September, you get to put yourself on the list.
Not because you need to become a different person.
Not because you need to dress “younger” or more “appropriately.”
And certainly not because your wardrobe needs to conform to someone else’s idea of what a woman your age should wear.
Because getting dressed should feel easier, more enjoyable and more like you.
The kids aren’t the only ones who deserve a September glow-up.
You made it through summer. Buy the shoes.
And if you want to go one step further, bring in a personal stylist and get your wardrobe sorted before the holiday madness begins.
Imagine arriving at December with your wardrobe already working for you.
Now that’s a Christmas gift I’d get behind.
Looking for a personal stylist in Toronto, Durham Region or the GTA?
I work with women who are ready to stop shopping reactively and start getting dressed with intention. Whether you need a closet edit, personal shopping, a wardrobe refresh or help redefining your personal style, the goal is the same: to create a wardrobe that works for your real life.
Because you have enough to think about this fall.
What you’re wearing shouldn’t be one of them.
