Fit Is What Truly Matters

Why the Number on Your Clothing Tag Doesn’t Actually Matter…

Let’s be honest: how often do you base your self-worth—or your shopping decisions—on the size on a clothing label?

If you wear women’s clothing, you’ve probably experienced the frustration of inconsistent sizing. You might be a size 8 in one brand, a 12 in another, and a medium somewhere else. It’s enough to make anyone feel discouraged or confused in the fitting room.

But here’s the truth: the number on the tag doesn’t define you. The fit does.

Why Clothing Sizes Are So Inconsistent

There’s no universal sizing standard across brands. Each label uses its own pattern blocks, fit models, and sizing charts. A “size 10” from one store might have completely different measurements than a “size 10” from another. Add vanity sizing and international conversions into the mix, and it becomes clear—clothing sizes are anything but.

This inconsistency leads many people to feel like they’ve “gone up a size” or that their body is the problem. It’s not. The sizing system is broken—not you.

Fit Is What Truly Matters

So instead of focusing on the number or letter on the label, focus on how the clothing fits your unique body. Here’s what good fit looks and feels like:

  • It sits comfortably without digging in, sliding around, or shifting as you move.
  • It allows for natural movement—no tugging, adjusting, or sucking in required.
  • It flatters your shape, highlights your favourite features, and feels good to wear.
  • It fits your body all month long—not just when you’ve worked out more, eaten less, or had more sleep.

Your body deserves to be dressed well as it is today. You shouldn’t need to change your body to suit your clothes—your clothes should suit your body.

How to Shop for Fit Instead of Size

Here are a few simple tips to start dressing for fit, not for size:

  1. Bring multiple sizes into the fitting room. Don’t limit yourself to “your” size. Fit is about how it looks on you, not what the tag says because we know that is unreliable.
  2. Focus on feel and movement. A good fit should move with you, not restrict you.
  3. Tailoring is your best friend. If something fits well in most places but needs a tweak, have it altered. A little tailoring can turn “just okay” into “perfect.”
  4. Let go of the guilt. Choosing a bigger size isn’t giving up—it’s choosing comfort, confidence, and style that actually fits. Choose you! Let go of the size fixation.

Let the Algorithm Have the Numbers

Fit is personal. It’s also empowering. When you stop obsessing over sizes and start dressing for your real body, you show up as the most authentic, confident version of yourself.

So next time you’re shopping or getting dressed, ask yourself:
“Does this fit me well?” instead of “What size is this?”

Because fit is always in style.
