How it Started vs How it’s Going
When identity shifts, wardrobes often lag behind. Whether it’s kids, career change, major life shift or just a change in your weight – it can be hard to find what to wear and (importantly) how after something changes. What we need from our wardrobe and how we want to be able to use it also changes. Let’s break it down:
Kids
After kids many things change – most noticeably for many of us is our body and after that, our time. When you’re dressing a body after kids I find many of my clients are just more aware of how clothing sits on their bodies. Maybe the fabrics they loved before tug and pull in ways that don’t feel comfortable or flattering. And time – time! Remember when you could just spend ages trying things on, trying new combinations and finally landing on the perfect look? Who has the time?! After kids you need a closet that functions – practically in how pieces sit on your body and also in terms of cohesion – you need to be able to grab three pieces that go together while your toddler pulls at your ankles. No time for slow deliberations here!
Career Shifts
I had a client recently that invited me in because although she’s still working in the same field, her position has changed and she needed to level up her wardrobe accordingly. What she wore as a junior associate just wasn’t hitting the mark for a senior executive. Your clothes not only need to fit and feel like you but they need to be appropriate for where you’re at professionally. The mall-designed blazers might have been ok as a junior, but in a leadership role you need pieces that speak to your level of performance and acumen. Finding clothes that fit the role right now better positions you to level up.
Life Changes
Maybe in your 20s you were single and going out most evenings. Maybe now in your 30s or 40s you’re mosting at home or maybe you’re on the dating scene once again and what you were drawn to before just isn’t cutting it. Styles change, for sure, but often how we actually wear our clothes can change too. I used to love a form fitting top and bottom and now I cannot stand having anything that sits too close on my body. Whether it’s our marital status or preferred silhouettes, when we change our clothes should, too!
Colour Updates
I’m not make-up guru but I can tell you definitely from a wardrobe perspective – our colouring changes as we age and that means that colours that once flattered can feel off. Whether all of a sudden they wash us out or we need more vibrancy to our wardrobe to bring life back to our face, the way colour reads on us changes and we need to update our wardrobe accordingly.
Style
Finally, and somewhat obviously, styles change. What was the height of fashion 10 years ago suddenly dates you and makes you look lost in time. Style shifts and we need to be able to reference trend-driven updates without falling prey to fashion victim choices. How we interpret trends can change and how we keep our wardrobe feeling relevant without falling into trends for the sake of trends, that’s where bringing on a professional can help.
As a personal stylist I work with clients to cut through the clutter and get to the source of what they need. Whether that’s a colour coded closet overhaul, or a shopping appointment to bring in some key pieces to update wardrobe staples.
As we go through life we change both out of necessity and out of response to things around us. A personal stylist will help guide you through these stages so that what you wear feels aligned, current and making sure you look your very best through every new phase.
